BRAZIL - Atabaia & Porto Allegra

On September 1, 2004, I flew from New Orleans, Louisiana to Miami, Florida.  From there, I caught the red eye to Sao Paolo, Brazil, arriving at 5:30 a.m.   It took me about 1 hr and 45 minutes to clear Immigration and Customs, after which I proceeded to repack some of my luggage and check in for my flight to Porto Allegra.  I sat down to await the arrival of Enrique Soares from Washington, D.C.  and Fr. Hector Vega from Texas.  Our Chicago five (Connie from Nevada, Sally  from Arizona, and Phyllis, Alicia, and Sr. Jessica) arrived late morning and we proceeded to our destination ... the shrine at Atabaia (Ah cha bai ya).

The area is beautiful and we got our first taste of heaven!  At Atabaia, there's an outdoor arena where Masses and conferences are held.  It holds up to 850 people and we're told that that sometimes is not large enough to accommodate all the pilgrims!

From Atabaia, we proceeded on to Porto Allegra and spent the night in the shadows of the shrine.  After breakfast and Mass in the Shrine, we had lunch at a bar-b-que, Brazilian style.  The buffet was laden with various foods with which we were unfamiliar and we were careful not to eat anything raw.  The waiters came around with the meats on a sword-size skewer from which you were supposed to point the area where you wanted your meat sliced.  A tong was provided so you could easily transfer the meat to your plate.  It was a delicious meal!  After lunch, we proceeded to Santa Maria, arriving late that evening.
